Below you may find my life story in my own words!
I grew up in Cresskill, New Jersey, a close suburb of New York City. My heritage is Hungarian, and my mom is world renowned concert pianist Christina Kiss, who specializes in the music of the great Hungarian virtuoso Franz Liszt. Growing up, there was always music in the house, and I made my Carnegie Hall debut at the age of two months old, when my mom took me out on stage after one of her solo recitals! As I grew up, I realized that performing was in my blood. At the age of 12 I was accepted into the American Academy of Dramatic Art Precollege Program in New York City. The Academy has quite a history-Kirk Douglas, Lauren Bacall, Robert Redford, Spencer Tracy, and many others famously studied there. It was there that I acted in my first professional plays and scenes. Soon, I discovered that I had a voice when auditioning for the high school musicals. I began singing lessons, and immediately realized that my destiny was also to sing! I finished the last 2 years of high school in one year online with Indiana University High School. Operatically trained, I spent 2 years at the Manhattan School of Music Precollege, and then continued my studies there in the college division and received my bachelor’s degree in vocal performance. I was then accepted into the most selective college in the entire United States–the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where Leonard Bernstein and so many other great artists of the past studied! With an acceptance level below colleges such as Harvard and Princeton, I was one of 2 singers chosen in my program when I was accepted! As the most selective and renowned conservatory in the world, Curtis has a learn-by-doing approach, and I was immediately cast in leading roles in professional operas in professional theaters. I spent 4 years at Curtis, and received my Master of Music degree, and then my Professional Studies Degree, one of the highest degrees possible in my profession!
Highlights from the Curtis years include singing Leporello and Commendatore with Opera Philadelphia, as well as singing the leading roles of Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro, and Don Alfonso in Cosi fan Tutte in a concert of opera scenes with Metropolitan Opera music director Yannick Nézet-Séguin and full Orchestra in Verizon Hall in Philadelphia! I also took a comic turn as Bartolo in Barber of Seville in November 2019 to great acclaim and reviews. Other Operatic highlights from Curtis Include playing Judge Turpin in Sweeney Todd, Collatinus in The Rape of Lucretia, Prince Gremin in Eugene Onegin, and King Arkel in Pelléas et Melisande! I am a baritone, but I started singing as a bass, which means I have studied and performed 2 entirely different sets or roles and repertoire. All through my time at Manhattan School of Music and up until my last year at Curtis, I labeled myself as a bass (albeit one with a large range), until in early 2019 I began to discover my upper register and the true tessitura of my voice! In May of 2020, I was cast again by Maestro Yannick Nézet-Séguin in his Strauss Elektra performances with the Philadelphia Orchestra, alongside Christine Goerke. These performances were cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, and are currently in the process of being rescheduled!
In addition to singing, I am also a Shakespearean actor, and frequently perform a program of Shakespearean songs, arias from Shakespearean operas, tunes from Shakespeare-inspired musicals, and even Shakespearean monologues themselves! I even performed Shakespearean monologues in a masterclass at the museum at Shakespeare’s house in Stratford-upon-Avon in England! At Curtis, I performed a Shakespeare recital in Field concert hall, and was even invited to perform Shakespeare inspired works as an educational experience for the student body at Villanova University. In addition to this, I performed several concerts at Curtis and throughout the area, as concertizing is a huge priority to me, and the recital is a medium I love! Paradoxically, I believe that nothing is more important for a singer than being 100% invested in the character and acting, and that for an actor, nothing is more of an asset in a performance than the voice. Singing and Acting together is one of the most supreme forms of art in my opinion!
I grew up loving all literature, and reading the works of Tolstoy, Hugo, Dumas, Dostoevsky, Balzac, Verne, Dickens, Wilde, and many more. This was the beginning of my love for story-telling! I remember very clearly reading the Count of Monte Cristo at 11 years old, and becoming absolutely hooked on the art of storytelling! I myself have dabbled at writing, and have written many short stories, and even a novel. Another piece of trivia is that I am a film buff, and particularly an expert of the movies from the 1930’s to the 1970’s.
In other words, I am a singing, acting, shakespearean, literature-loving, film-buff! I hope you enjoyed the summarized reader’s digest version of my life. I’m always looking for new acquaintances, so feel free to contact me! I’m attaching a link to my photo gallery, performance page, and contact page right below this!
